Today marks 90 years since Supermarine’s prototype fighter, K5054, made its maiden flight from Eastleigh in Southampton.

Originally almost given the name ‘Shrew’, the aircraft that became known as the Spitfire ,created by the design team led by R. J. Mitchell, would go on to achieve far more than its designers could have imagined.

It became an enduring symbol of British aviation history and earned admiration across the many nations that operated it.

90 years on, its legacy continues. Today we honour the people whose ingenuity and determination brought the Spitfire into being
